The paper deals with the concept of connotation which is crucial for the semiotic analysis of printed advertisements. The author of the paper investigates and evaluates the most prominent factors of creating connotation, such as context, syntagmatic relations of verbal and visual elements in printed magazine advertisement texts, rhetorical tropes, intertextual links and modality of the message. It is argued that every product promoted is supplied with certain connotational value that goes beyond its practical use. The practical research carried out by the author reveals that the path by which advertising works is rich, varied, and complex. According to the present analysis, semiotic theory proves to be useful for deconstruction both the surface and the deeper social and cultural meaning of advertisement text. The results of the analysis fully correspond to the purpose of the paper, which is to empower advertisement addressees to become media literate by deconstructing the consumer culture that surrounds them.
