The region is a territory, which is characteristic of common resources, similar trade opportunities, thus leading to mutual interdependance among such the countries therein. Co-operation within the region, as a rule, is close, and the countries within the region tend to acquire experience of the other states. However, due to substantial differentiation among the member states of each particular region, there will inevitably be countries which will react more steadily and more distinctively to global processes.
The present research deals with various issues concerning the Baltic Sea Region, its historic background, level of development and competitiveness, analyses of qualities , which are characteristic to each particular state within the region, as well as, with various co-operation programs, launched in the region, major indicators of the level of macroeconomics during the past five years – alterations to the growth of the GDP, level of inflation and unemployment, foreign trade and external debts of the countries. Summary of the analyses to the elaborated Research paper provides for making a conclusion, that all countries within the region have reached different development levels, as concerns economics – transition period countries and industrially developed countries.
It also may be concluded, that the region is characteristic of high level of competitiveness on a global scale, however, such competitivenes is basically the success of certain countries, and partially may be explained by close co-operation among the countries within the region. As of the year 2008, the Baltic Sea Region is facing economic recesion, as, prior to the above mentioned year, all indicators and results, which have been dealt with in the present Research Paper, tended to grow. That is particularly caused by the world financila crises, which affects each and every country.
