Translations of travel guides and tourism advertisements are target-oriented texts, whose principal function is to create interest in the target reader and persuade him or her to visit the place. The goal of the research is to examine available literature about text types and modern theories of translation, and to investigate what cultural impact might be observed in Latvian-English translations of travel guides and tourism advertisements about Latvia. It is reached by examining travel guides and tourism advertisements about Latvia in the course of history and by analyzing how these translations perform their persuasive function. During the research it was found out that the persuasive element in travel guides and tourism advertisements varies depending on the period of time in Latvia's history, which proves the hypothesis that the source culture influences the effectivity of translations of travel guides and tourism advertisements and very often dictates the norms for the translator.
