Mūsdienās informācijas iegūšanai tiek izmantoti dažādi mediji. Privātos medijus sponsorē galvenokārt reklāmdevēji, tādēļ neatņemama to sastāvdaļa ir reklāma.
Nowadays the main sources of information are various types of media. The private media is generally sponsored by advertisers; therefore advertisements become an integral part of different media. However, only a high-quality advertisement can reach the target audience. What are the main criteria for a successful advertisement?
One of the keys for success is the language. In spite of that, there are many advertising texts where the main idea is not clearly expressed; the language is stylistically flawed or grammatically incorrect.
The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the translation strategies used by Latvian advertisement translators; to research how the German-language advertisements are represented in the Latvian media and to make suggestions for improvement in this area.
The research topics are automobile and cosmetic ads in German and their Latvian translations. It was concluded that the translator was required to possess knowledge of both languages, as well as of marketing and country specific culture for the successful translation of advertisements. The target audiences for this master thesis are students, translators and advertising agencies.
