- This paper illustrates ways of word formation both in Latvian and English, laying stress on the national tongue.
The aim of the paper is to study neologisms in Latvian in 21st century as well as to discover the most productive way novel words enter the state language these days. The paper advances the hypothesis which contains the idea that currently the majority of neologisms enter the state language as borrowings due to the increasing impact of the English language and the large number of people speaking Russian.
The results of the study are obtained by analysing the neologisms, collected in the journals of this century.
The paper comes to a conclusion that the majority of the encountered novel words are borrowings mainly from the English and Russian language. Furthermore, they have entered the national tongue after simple transliteration. The majority of these words are of colloquial style.
