Purpose: to compare stapled haemorrhoidectomy and stapled haemorrhoidectomy combined with excision of external haemorrhoids.
Methods: we analyzed treatment results of 507 patients. In the period from January 1998 to March 2007 the were performed 83 (16,37%) stapled haemorrhoidectomies and 424 (83,63%) stapled haemorrhoidectomies combined with excision of external haemorrhoids.
Results: postoperative haemorrhage developed in 8,48% of patients after stapled haemorrhoidectomy and in 1,4% of patients after stapled haemorrhoidectomy combined with excision of external haemorrhoids (p<0,001). The first year recurrence rate was 12,33% for stapled haemorrhoidectomy and 1,7% for stapled haemorrhoidectomy combined with excision of external haemorrhoids (p<0,001).
Conclusions: our experience shows that stapled haemorrhoidectomy can be effectively performed in combination with excision of external piles. This kind of combination is associated with low rate of complications and recurrences.
