dc.description.abstract | This work reflects how beliefs about tasks, roles of woman and gender relationship norms were constructed in the newly founded Republic of Latvia. Links between increasing self-confidence of the nation and changes in gender relationships and ideas about roles suitable to male and female are analyzed. Basing on the qualitative content analysis of text items published from 1922 to 1929 in the newspaper addressed for students and academicians -"Students" - prevailing attitudes towards female emancipation movement arc described, as well as six constructions of female image are identified and analyzed: woman who has forgotten her family, woman obsessed with beauty, woman-fighter, woman-threat of nation, woman-student and woman-victim. Research results suggest that prevailing constructions of gender knowledge rationalized closing of woman in the private sphere trough emphasizing female intellectual inferiority and national importance of mother duties. Work represents clashes of values in post-war Latvia, typical discussions on gender roles in given time frame. as well as complicated road of Latvian woman to education, employment and power structures.
