The theme of the Master thesis is „Changes in climate and river runoff in Latvian river basins at the end of the 21st century”. The goal of the study is to investigate application possibilities of conceptual rainfall-runoff model HBV in the simulation of hydrological processes and in the hydrometeorological parameter changes of the river basins of Latvia in the future climate conditions.
The literature review includes application possibilities of hydrological modelling and description of hydrological models. Review also includes various climate models and future scenarios, moreover, there are studies on climate change and its effects on river runoff in the SE part of the Baltic Sea drainage basin.
Empirical research includes the simulation of the hydrological processes in the river basins of Latvia, based on IPCC future emission scenarios A2 and B2, the conceptual rainfall-runoff model HBV is used. The changes in the hydrometeorological parameters were analyzed using control period (1961 – 1990) and two IPCC future emission scenarios (A2 and B2 (2071 – 2100)). The results show significant changes in the case of scenario A2 and these changes are related to the increase of the meteorological data (air temperature, precipitation and evaporation), while in the total annual river runoff is expected to decrease. The significant seasonal changes both meteorological and hydrological parameters are mainly related to winter season, less to summer and autumn seasons.
