German writer Franz Hessel’s creative work is being researched in this Bachelor paper. In particular his urban perception and the way he depicts his childhood city of Berlin in the book “Spazieren in Berlin” are examined.
The reader is provided with a little insight into history of the emergence of big cities. Besides, based on Georg Simmel’s essay “Grossstädte und das Geistesleben” it is revealed how human perception of cites transformed during the 19th century, the time of Franz Hessel.
The term ‘feuilleton’ – genre of journalism and literature – which is considered to be Hessel’s most favourite form of expression, is explained.
Next, this paper explores a social character called ‘flaneur’ – a 19th century Parisian phenomenon – since Hessel’s urban perception is tightly connected with the character.
Finally and most importantly, considering the prior research the miniature collection of prose “Spazieren in Berlin” is analysed with a special focus on three chapters.
