| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Hard news articles are written to inform, whereas the soft news are written to entertain. These communicative purpose differences determine the register variation within the newspaper genre. The goal of the paper is to explore the variation of adjectives and end-marks across leads of two registers. To reach the goal, theories were reviewed, a corpus of leads was compiled, and then the frequency and discourse analysis were applied to investigate the use of the adjectives and end-marks across lead types. As a result, it was revealed that the variety, frequency and emotionality of the adjectives in the soft news leads is more prominent. Moreover, these leads contain questions and exclamations while in the hard leads only statements are present. Thus, the communicative purpose of the articles determines the use of adjectives and end-marks. | en_US |
