Media analysts have observed an important tendency recently – the growth and dominance of visual over verbal information. I would like to verify with this research, if the phenomenon mentioned applies also to advertising sector.
To make sure of the rightness of the hypothesis “Texts made by advertising agency “Metro Leo Burnett” are placed in balance with other advertisement elements of advertisement, according to general theoretic principles of the layout design”, I acquired knowledge about the methods of research, theory about the functions of copy (text) and language, the principles of writing copy, structure of advertisements, consumers’ reading habits, visually and verbally oriented people. I also clarified how the composition, organization and layout of ad can influence perception and memory processes and studied the synergy of text and picture – when it is better to use visual, when the verbal tools of persuasion and when – the both of them.
I carried out a quantitative content analysis of advertisements made by “Metro Leo Burnett”, analyzed their correspondence with theory, and tried to elicit according to which principles the ads have been made.
When the results were ready I had qualitative interviews with experts: Kristaps Ģelzis (creative director of agency “Metro Leo Burnett”), Pēteris Pūrītis (the other creative director of agency “Metro Leo Burnett”), Ieva Melgalve (copywriter), Emīls Rupais (supervisor of the graphic designer group in newspaper „Diena”) Edmunds Apsolons (manager of advertising department in newspaper „Diena”), Anna Vulāne (Dr. philology. assoc. professor of The University of Latvia) and Janīna Kursīte-Pakule (linguist).
My hypothesis was proved true partly. The part of hypothesis “texts made by advertising agency “Metro Leo Burnett” are placed, according to general theoretic principles of the layout design” was proved true, because examining the placement of texts, I found no departures from the norm, although practically the agency doesn’t work considering any theory of layouts - everything depends on finance. Irrespective of that, ads conform to standards of the layout. The part of hypothesis “texts made by advertising agency “Metro Leo Burnett” are placed in balance with other elements of advertisement” was disproved because sometimes there is too much verbal information in the ads of “Metro Leo Burnett”.
The main reasons why the texts are not placed in balance with other advertisement elements (pictures) are:
● pictures raise the costs of ad;
● there are goods difficult to visualize;
● the brand may be semantically capacious or well-known – the product or service doesn’t need the visualization;
● some ads have no need for pictures (for example, the informative ads);
● the visual identification is built up by setting of colors, font or logo in some ads so there is no need for pictures;
● the wish to stand out with graphic impression against the background of visual ads.
This Bachelor Thesis was done during the 7th and 8th study semester to graduate from the Faculty of Social Sciences (University of Latvia) under the supervision of associate professor Miervaldis Mozers.
