Relevance of the Master Thesis topic is determined by the political communication entering the public life that is associated with a more active struggle for acquisition and retention of political power. Political communication in modern society has become an important part of the political process. In this case, a very large role is played by the media, as the public perceives almost all the political information through the media.
The results of the Riga Municipality elections, the 10th and 11th Parliamentary elections showed that most of the public support the PPA „Saskaņas centrs”. It is known that at the 11th Parliamentary elections the nominees of the PPA „Saskaņas centrs” got more than 28% of votes in Riga and other Latvian regions. However, despite the popularity in major Latvian regions the PPA „Saskaņas centrs” still remained in opposition.
The study of the theoretical literature clarifies the definition of the political communication and shows its role in the political process, which helps to develop the concept of the political communication and in the future it can be used in the study of the political process in modern Latvia.
The hypothesis of this work is that the Political parties alliance „Saskaņas centrs” has remained in opposition and has not entered the 11th Parliamentary governing coalition mainly due to insufficient support from the Latvian electorate, and that situation was caused due to insufficiently preparation of the political communication methods chosen by the PPA „Saskaņas centrs” and the wrong pre-election target channel selection.
The study is related to the last Riga City Council and the 10th and 11th Parliamentary elections, as it is within that range the support for the PPA „Saskaņas centrs” increased. So, the period from the Riga Municipal elections of 2009 until the 11th Parliamentary elections of 2011 was selected for the Master’s study. The method of qualitative research will be used for media content analysis.
