Bakalaura darba „Digitālā plaisa – situācijas izpēte Valmieras rajonā” teorētiskajā daļā tiek izzināta informāciju tehnoloģiju nozīme dzīves kvalitātes uzlabošanā, kā arī tiek konstatēts, ka tehnoloģiju un informācijas nepieejamības dēļ veidojas digitālā plaisa. Veicot pētījumu par datora un interneta lietošanas prasmēm, izmantoju socioloģisko pētījuma metodi – novērošanu. Izmantojot Valmieras rajona padomes skolu pārvaldes datus, veicu situācijas izpēti rajona skolu informātikas kabinetos par datortehnikas kvalitāti. Situācijas izpētes mērķis noskaidrot, vai digitālā plaisa vērojama arī skolās, kur tiek sagatavota nākamā informācijas sabiedrība. Izmantojot datu vākšanas metodi – anketēšanu, ieguvu datus par iedzīvotāju datorprasmēm. Informācijas tehnoloģiju izmantošanas iespējas nav līdzvērtīgas. Liela atšķirība ir vērojama starp lauku un pilsētu skolu nodrošinājumu ar jaunākajām IT. Vājāka informācijpratība ir vietās, kur zema ekonomiskā attīstiba.

The theoretical part of the Bachelor’s paper „Digital divide - research of the situation in Valmiera district” investigates the impact of information and communication technologies upon the quality of life. The author establishes shortage of technologies and information as creators of digital divide in information environment.
The research was conducted using several methods. Valmiera district school board data enabled the analysis of computer equipment quality at school IT classrooms of Valmiera district. The purpose of the analysis was to determine whether the digital divide can be observed at schools which educate the members of information society. The author employed also the survey method in order to gather data about the computer skills of seven local municipal public library patrons.
The author concludes that possibilities of information technology use are not equal. There exists great difference between urban and rural schoools in IT equipment. The research shows lower level of information literacy in economically under-developed places.
