Tephra is a volcanic material, which is carried upwards in the eruption cloud, and then dispersed sideways by wind, hundreds and thousands kilometres away from the source. As tephrochronolgy is a useful tool in Quarternary stratigraphy, many tephrochronological investigations have been made in the whole Northatlantic region for the past century. These investigations have proved the wide dispersal of Islandic origin tephra in the Northatlantic region and its high value in the Quarternary sediment stratification and dating.
This bachelor work presents first Holocene tephra shards found in the territory of Latvia, which were discovered in Cena mire peat. The investigation was made in an open section by taking monolith peat samples and then identifying the shards by their morphologic properties in the laboratory. The identified shards may be of high value for tephra dispersal mapping in the whole Northatlantic region, and also they prove that tephrochronological investigations are possible in the territory of Latvia.
Keywords: Cena mire, tephrochronology, tephra shard morphology.
