Nickname is the unofficial name, which often people use every day to identify each other, but there is still no consensus on the definition of nicknames, ie, each researcher can – of course, to some extent – interpret it on his own subjective perspective.
The goal of paper is to find out exactly what the term nickname means, identify and compare Finnish and Latvian youth`s nicknames, classify the information by the gathered nickname`s features, including the analysis of the theoretical material.
The paper analyses 80 mutually distinct nicknames of Finnish youth and 110 mutually distinct nicknames of Latvian youth. It is possible to distinguish 7 groups for the motivation of Finnish youth’s nicknames and 6 groups for the Latvian youth`s nicknames. The paper contains nine images that reflect the analyzed material.
The analyzed material shows that the role of nicknames in youth discourse is very significant.
