The cohesive ties used in film taglines are analysed in this bachelor thesis. The aim of this paper is to determine how cohesive ties help to link taglines together with other parts of multimodal texts. The theoretical research method is the comparative analysis of linguistic theories on language functions, context, discourse analysis, multimodality, and cohesion. In the empirical part of the paper, discourse analysis considering Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory on cohesion in English is implemented in order to investigate how taglines are connected with images visible on the posters and in the trailers they advertise. Taglines of 100 English language films were analysed. The results of the research show that the most frequently used grammatical cohesive ties are reference and ellipsis. It may be concluded that taglines that do not rely on grammatical cohesive ties either achieve cohesion through lexical devices or they exist separately from the other parts of multimodal text.
