Wormwood is a plant of Asteraceae with high thujone concentration in it’s essential oil. The chemical composition of the plant differs in different regions. During the storage drugs can lose part of its volatile active constituents, that can diminish its pharmacological effectiveness.
The aim of the present paper is to find the isolation method of essential oils, as well as the available publications about essential oil Artemisia absinthium antibacterial properties. The task was to isolate essential oil and test it's antibacterial characteristics on micro-organisms Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae un Enterobacter aerogenes, with the disc diffusion method.
As a result yellowish – green oil with its specific aroma was obtained. The results turned out to be sensitive only to Staphylococcus aureus, where the inhibition zone is 8 mm in diameter.
When the amount of essential oils in the drugs from the previous season and in those drugs which are close to their expiration date was compared, then diminished amount of essential oils in the latter was observed thus, these drugs do not meet quality requirements.
