| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | The thesis is aimed at analysing and comparing communities of Latvian and Lithuanian deportees through conducting oral histories with survivors of the Soviet deportations. The focus of the research is finding patterns and motivations for cooperation in communities bounded by the experience of forced migration. Many theoretical issues arise in the research: how we understand forced migration in general, what factors influence community building in exile, how trust is gained after the trauma of displacement, how our memory remembers traumatic experiences, finally, how one heals and continues to live as a member of a community. The empirical part suggests that exile fosters the creation of a new moral community of the deported people. However, in the situations when the whole community is in a life-threatening situation, the cooperation for survival is limited to a family unit.
Key words: coercive deportations in the Soviet Union, forced migration, community building, strategies of survival, trauma, memory, healing. | en_US |
