Andria Darsavelidze’s Bachelor thesis takes a look at the narrative films by the celebrated independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. The study focuses on the mechanics of the aesthetic experience triggered by Jarmusch’s films, relying on the theory of aesthetic response and Wolfgang Iser’s work in particular. By utilizing the methodology developed by Iser, the study attempts to expose the process of expectation buildup and their subsequent unfulfillment in
nine Jarmusch’s films. Thus, the work not only finds a unique application of Iser’s theory of aesthetic response but also reveals the features that prove to pervade Jarmusch’s cinematic work.
