Idiomas ir nemainīgas frāzes, kuru nozīmi nevar saprast burtiski. To pārnestās nozīmes dēļ, idiomas bieži vien rada grūtības tulkotājiem. Idioms are fixed phrases, which cannot be understood literally. Because of their figurative nature, idioms often pose a challenge to translators. The aim of this paper was to analyse the translation of idioms in two stories by Stephen King – Secret Window, Secret Garden and Library Policeman – and to ascertain what translation strategies can be applied and would be the most effective when translating idioms. A total of 199 idioms were analysed and the most frequently applied translation strategy proved to be translation by paraphrase – 59% of all idioms were paraphrased. Not always the chosen translation strategy was successfully applied, resulting in unnatural and incomprehensible target language text – only 56% of idiom translations were evaluated as correct, i.e. preserving the meaning of the source text idiom.
