dc.description.abstract | This paper presents the understudied citizenship regime of Montenegro in depth. By looking at people’s experiences with naturalization, it explores the transformation of citizenship in a post-partition environment of this young state. On a more general level, it shows how citizenship status and rights are granted on different levels. A theoretical framework builds on citizenship studies, the migration framework and the role of ethnic identities in Montenegro in relation to citizenship and citizenship policy, followed by an explanation of factors defining the citizenship regime of the state. Finally, qualitative interviews are used to illustrate the citizenship regime in practice and to shed light on connections among ethnicity, citizenship legislation, and citizenship policy in practice.
Keywords: citizenship, naturalization, immigration, post-partition, constellations, politics and ethnicity. | en_US |
