Bakalaura darba “Sievietes un vīrieša ķermeņa konstrukcija žurnāla „Pastaiga” modes lapās. 2003.
The main theme of the bachelor degree paper is “Visual construction of Male’s and Female’s Image in Fashion Sheets of Magazine “Pastaiga” 2003 – 2005”. There are two hypotheses brought forward by author:
1) The magazine “Pastaiga” demonstrates the female body as the one to resemble and to strive for.
2) The magazine “Pastaiga” demonstrates the male body contrary to the assumed idea of masculinity.
These hypotheses are well grounded and well proved.
The bachelor degree paper consists of theoretical part and empirical research.
In the theoretical part the author discusses the theory of body discipline, visual methodology, the female and male sexuality, the gaze theory, technical aspects of photography, and their construction and visual content analysis.
The empirical part consists of the visual content analysis and depth interviews.
The visual content analysis was done of female and male bodies in fashion pages of the magazine “Pastaiga” (in the period from January 2003 until December 2005). The female and male bodies are inspected and analyzed separately.
The author has worked out the criteria of the content analysis based on researcher Sandra Lee Bartky conception of body representation.
In the empirical part of bachelor degree paper 119 fashion pictures are inspected and 155 bodies are analyzed in the aggregate. The author interviewed four people and two experts (The magazine “Pastaiga” stylist Anna Volkova and the co owner of model agency “Vacatio” Ieva Lipina ) and also two regular readers of the magazine - a woman and a man.
In the interviews the principles of the choose of models for “Pastaiga” fashion pages and female and male presentation tendencies are pointed out. The author also emphasizes the fact that both sexes perceived the pictures of the male and female models differently.
The conclusion is drawn, based on the results of depth interviews and the visual content analysis.
