The title of the Master’s Thesis is „Ethics in the Work of Independent Auditors”. Ethics has always been a topical issue in the occupation of an auditor, as activities of certified auditors are based on compliance with criteria of ethics. The Master’s Thesis consists of 4 chapters, each chapter having its subchapters. The first chapter is dedicated to research in the structure of Latvian system of control, necessity of the independent auditing, to clarifying preconditions for obtaining a status of an independent auditor and fundamental ethical principles for the auditor’s profession. In the second chapter the author gives vast attention to research into requirements stipulated by the regulatory enactments regulating observance of the fundamental principles of the auditors’ professional ethics, as well as examines potential threats to the observance of the fundamental principles and executable precautionary measures in order to prevent the threats or minimize them to an acceptable level. When declaring his/her statement on credibility of the company’s financial statements, the auditor is responsible to the whole society, and accordingly an auditor has to take into consideration all possible forms of responsibility. The third chapter of the Master’s Thesis is devoted to identification of threats to the observance of independence principle, prevention of such threats and minimization thereof to an acceptable level, as the fundamental principles of ethics cannot be separated from each other but viewed together, including also the auditor’s independence. In the fourth chapter the author investigates how the observance of the norms of the auditors’ professional ethics is monitored, as well as examines the relevant problems. Latvian Association of Certified Auditors has an important role in monitoring the activities of auditors. Four standing committees operate in the framework of the Association. The Conclusion summarizes the basic conclusions and proposals obtained as a result of the research.
