Nacionālās identitātes veidošanās un saglabāšana: ASV Latviešu sabiedrības piemērs

Abstract

Maģistra darba mērķis bija pētīt Amerikas Savienotajās Valstīs dzīvojošo latviešu un latviešu izcelsmes iedzīvotāju nacionālo identitāti. Aplūkoti to veidojošie elementi, veidi, kā notiek identitātes saglabāšana, un faktori, kas ietekmē tās mainību. Laika gaitā atšķirīgā kontekstā ASV veidojušās dažādas latviešu sabiedrības. Latvijā dzimušie un nesenāk ASV ieceļojušie imigranti veido transnacionālu sabiedrību. Darbā raksturota ASV latviešu sabiedrības ģeogrāfiskā izplatība un saistība starp dzīvesvietas novietojumu un nacionālo identitāti. Pētīta arī ASV latviešu ikdienas ģeogrāfija nacionālās identitātes kontekstā, novērtējot saikni starp latviešiem ASV un Latvijā, organizāciju lomu nacionālās identitātes veidošanā un saglabāšanā un citus aspektus. The purpose of this master’s degree thesis was to investigate the national identity of Latvian citizens and American citizens of Latvian descent living in the United States of America. The study analyzed elements that form national identity, ways of preserving national identity, and factors that affect changes in national identity. Various Latvian communities developed in the United States over time and in different contexts. Immigrants who were born in Latvia and migrated to the United States more recently formed a transnational community. The thesis describes the geographic distribution of Latvians in the United States, and it analyzes the relationship between the location of the place of residence and national identity. The study examined the impact of the everyday geography of Latvians-Americans on their national identity. This was done by evaluating the connections between Latvians in the United States and Latvia and by examining the role of Latvian-American organizations and other influences in developing and preserving the national identity of Latvian-Americans.
