Interpreting is proved to be a high-stress occupation because interpreters’ levels of mental and physical tension and mental stress are higher than those of people doing other jobs. These facts motivated the author of the present paper to undertake academic research in the field of stress management. To conduct the research, the author uses theoretical and practical methods, viz. the study of different types of stressors which interpreters come across in their work, methods of stress reduction as well as a field research revealing the ways interpreters deal with stress.
The author of the present paper has established that, first, there are various methods of long-term and short-term stress reduction. Second, though most respondents mentioned background knowledge as one of the main stress reduction instruments, breathing, voice training and positive thinking are often used to eliminate stress. Third, the perception of stress is highly subjective and is influenced by personal features of each individual, such as self-confidence or the way he/she judges a situation.
Key words: consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, causes of stress, stress reduction.
