Diplomdarbā analizēti divi viens no otra neatkarīgi tapuši K.S.
Author has attempted to analyze two different translations of C. S. Lewis „Screwtape Letters” into Latvian – Vilnis Treimanis`s translation „Viltprāša vēstules” and Ieva Burčika`s translation “Skrūvšņores vēstules”.
The theoretical part of the research paper deals with the issue of literary texts, its peculiarities and translator` task, as well as considers one of the most important concepts within translation studies – the concept of equivalence, both in terms of principles governing translation towards formal equivalence as well as principles governing translation towards functional equivalence.
The practical part of the research paper deals with practical comparison of the two translations in terms of translation criticism. The lexical equivalences, lexical correspondence, grammatical correctness and correspondence of the stylistic level were considered within the practical research. “Screwtape Letters” is a literary work with appealing function therefore it is crucial to consider the extra-linguistic determinants which help to render the appealing function of the source text.
In the analysis of both translations author tried to clarify whether it is possible to create the translation of a literary work with appealing functions by using the approach of dynamic equivalence, thus evoking target audience`s similar response to that the source text has had within the source audience.
