Atslēgvārdi: 20. gs. 30. gadu reklāma, riteņbraukšana, propaganda, dzīves stils, ideoloģiskais diskurss, vēsturiskā diskursa analīze, G. Special attention in the paper is devoted to the issue of how the national lifestyle of cycling is formed in advertising based on the ideological conceptions of K. Ulmanis’ authoritarian regime and on creating the identity of cyclists.
Research was conducted on the advertising discourse pursuant to the theoretical approach of G. S. Jowett and V. O’Donell to advertising as propaganda, as well as on the socially cognitive approach of T. A. van Dijk in the ideology and discourse research.
With the help of the quantitative content analysis, it has been established what themes and how intensely they are represented in the advertising discourse. In turn, the analysis of the R. Wodak’s complex historical discourse consisting of several levels allows: 1) the overlapping of the discourse themes in Latvian press and the G. Erenpreiss’ advertising to be reflected on, 2) the way ideology is reproduced in the representation of social groups provided in advertising to be followed and 3) the “us” group identity building strategies to be analysed. The most characteristic manipulation methods in advertising were established in accordance with E. Rigotti’s typology of manipulation methods. The aim of the research is to reveal in what way cycling is positioned in the advertising discourse as the national lifestyle.
The paper consists of the theoretical part, wherein theoretical approaches of propaganda, ideology, manipulation and life style are considered, insight is given in a historical context into the period under consideration, the methodical part, which acquaints readers with the research methods used in the paper and the research design, and the analytical part, within the framework of which the discourse is analysed.
As a result of the research, it has been established that cycling as the national lifestyle is formed in the G. Erenpreiss’ advertising discourse as a collective identity, where the most characteristic common feature is transportation via G. Erenpreiss’ bicycle and the Latvian identity.
