The aim of the thesis was to explore a discourse in Russian mass media regarding the NATO enlargement in 2004, to compare it with the official position of Russia on the enlargement and come to conclusion, how it influenced relations of Latvia and Russia. Hypothesis of the thesis is: There exist contradictions between official position of Russia and statements of officials in mass media about Latvia in connection with the NATO enlargement. Objects for the empirical research were statements of four Russian officials in four Russian newspapers. Thesis comprises three main chapters. The first chapter is a theoretical description of a great power concept and factors determining its foreign policy, as well as specific character of great and small countries’ relations. Second chapter includes an analysis of Russia’s foreign policy. Eventually, the third chapter comprises a content analysis of the officials’ statements in mass media regarding the NATO enlargement.
