The work „The wondrous creatures of „Shan hai jing””, except for some short translations of passages from this canon, which were published in „Encyclopedia of mythology” in J. Staburova’s article „Chinese mythology” (Riga, 1994), is the first attempt to translate fragments of it into latvian language. Short commentaries of the translation are given. Fragments describing the miraculous mythological spirits, animals, birds and fishes that dwell in every corner Under Heaven, as well as the ones that introduce unusual countries and their inhabitants, produced by the luxuriant imagination of ancient Chinese, were chosen for translation from eighteen scrolls (chapters) of the canon in accordance with the announced theme.
The work is supplemented with the illustrations and an index of transcribed names and geographical names that are given in the translation.
Hopefully this unassuming investigation in the field of ancient Chinese mythology will be useful for everyone interested in this aspect of Chinese culture.
