The main topic of the Bachelor paper “The photo coverage in web pages of the newspapers Diena and Latvijas Avize: analysis of the semiotic messages” is the issue of photo coverage’s low popularity and its negative effect on the development and prevalence of photo coverage as a significant genre of journalism.
The main goal of the research is to emphasize the significance of photo coverage as a genre of journalism and accent the necessity to develop it, revealing the advantages that make photo coverage a powerful tool in constructing different types of narratives.
The theoretical part of the paper deals with such issues as the web pages of the newspapers, the photo coverage, photo amateurism, visual communication, image, semiotics, narrative. The paper is based on Bignell J., Rose G. and Chatman S. theoretical approaches.
The empirical part of the paper consists of two major parts: the visual content analysis and the semiotic analysis of the results of visual content analysis. The chosen time period for analysis is 15th of August 2010 – 12th of May 2011. As a result, the photo coverages’ conformity to narrative structure as well as differences between narratives both newspapers communicate are identified.
