The heading of bachelor thesis is: „Use of the music in different types of sports shops”. The aim of the bachelor’s paper was to investigate the choice of music and quality of it in the sport shops of the centre of Riga with the help of quantitative observation. By using structured interviews with shop managers or shift managers the author’s intention was to clarify the utilization of music in shopping places as the means of background or as a resource to attract customers. Also, in structured interviews with the customers the author wanted to clear up their opinion about the music recorded in the sport shops of the centre of Riga, as well as the necessity and role of music in marketing establishments. The theoretical part of the work is based on the research of the perception of music and recording of it in marketing establishments, as well as on the sociologists’ opinion about the functions of music in the society and processes connected with it. The methodology of the work is formed by a case study where a quantitative observation and structured/partly structured interviews have been used. The research leads to the conclusion that music in the shops of foreign and local owners have been made use of differently, because the aims of utilizing music differ among several types of shops. In the shops of foreign owners the music has been used in order to attract customers, whereas in the shops of Latvian owners it serves as a background element. The customers have noticed it and they emphasize that music is a significant part of the shop marketing, although in Latvia it has not been put to use in an appropriate way.
