The bachelor work „Internet Radio: Description and Possibilities of the New Media” explores the problem which has been realized in radio industry during the internet age – the New Media creating various possibilities for the traditional media compels the traditional one to change and offer these possibilities.
The theoretical part starts with the theories of Network Society and New Media, after that – theories of traditional radio and internet radio. The empirical part consists of the study of five various internet radio stations (LR1, Radio SWH, Radio QBS, RIXC radio, ORB radio), which have been explored by using two methods – descriptive analyses and semi-structured interview with the leaders of the radio stations.
It’s concluded that ‘internet radio’ involves diversity and uncertainty, which has appeared because of the internet radio stations using various possibilities of the New Media. Thereby perception and meaning of the traditional way existing radio station is decreasing, but the meaning of certain advantages of radio grows. These advantages in various interpretations are being used by various internet radio stations thus preserving the radio status and in the same time arousing the competition for the traditional radio. Now in Latvia the New Media can be related to the market penetration phase when it enters the market developing new uses and attracting users.
