The topic of this thesis is the analysis of the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in Zemgale.
In Latvia 99% of all businesses are SMEs, and they are of significant value in national economy for having a direct impact on the rate of unemployment and, respectively, the welfare of the society. In addition, SMEs account for the majority of the Gross Domestic Product
The number of the incorporate businesses has been rapidly increasing since 2010, however most new enterprises cease their activities within the first three years due to various problems of development, for instance burden of taxation, concurrency, inadequate demand, or lack of properly qualified employees. In Riga, where the larger part of new enterprises are listed, the business environment is slightly more advanced. Nonetheless it is more challenging to start a business in the regions of Latvia.
The positive impact of SMEs on national economy and the development of regions is recognized not only by Latvia, but also by European Union, therefore the government and EU provides numerous support measures to SMEs.
The aim of the Bachelors Thesis: to research the development of SMEs, to determine the difficulties and obstacles that entrepreneurs in Zemgale have to face, to draw conclusions and propose solutions.
