This thesis examines the image of the German language on the Internet. The aim of the study is to determine which ideas about the German language nowadays are conveyed on websites in English, as well as the extent to which these ideas are perceived to be true.
To achieve this, representative web pages were selected that formed the basis for further analysis and observations. It was concluded that the mediated image of the German language is mainly composed of the following three notions: the German language sounds harsh and unpleasant; German has notably long compound words (which can be interpreted both positively and negatively); German has many unique words and expressions that have no equivalents in other languages. By conducting an online survey the existence of these images was confirmed, but also conflicting opinions were revealed.
