The chosen theme of the diploma work is “Substantial harm. Theory and practice”. The selection the mentioned theme is not accidental as since criminal law came into force, notwithstanding the row of amendments made to specify a purport of substantial harm and developed court practice there still can be recognized problems relating to the different comprehensions, detection and proving at the investigating institutions, prosecutor’s office and court of the concept of content of substantial harm.
The objective and the task of the diploma work are to fully understand the concept of content of substantial harm, its development through historically valid criminal laws in the territory of Latvia. As well as provide insight of existence of the substantial harm in the criminal laws of Estonia and Lithuania.
While elaborating the diploma work, in-depth knowledge or criminal law and criminal proceedings in general has been obtained.
