The rapid technological developments and the vast scope of information available on the internet raises the question, how to find balance between the rights to honour and dignity and freedom of speech which is the corner stone of democracy.
The author presents an insight to the protection of the right to honour and dignity, the balance of these rights between freedom of speech, and also outlines the differences in ECHR and Latvian court case law. The author also examines and provides conclusions on positive obligations that a country has to ensure the protection of honour and dignity through laws and regulations, and specifically how this is established in Latvian legal system, including situations when honour and dignity of peron has been violated by anonymous commentator.
