The subject of this research work is the image of the South Slavs in French literature in the first half of the XIX century. The imagological method used in the research is an interdisciplinary study area which springs from the literature, but is also affected by historical, social and cultural context.
In the French literature of the XIX century, the yugoslavophilia was expressed through an idealization of primitivism, underdevelopment and exoticism of the Slavic “barbarians” stimulated by the postulates of the Romantic movement which praised the life of the “noble savage”. The yugoslavophobia was expressed as a result of the politics marked by the fear of the possibility of the Russian supremacy among Slavs, political issues called “Pan-slavism” and the “Eastern Question”.
