The goal of the Master Thesis is to evaluate the current development of livestock through assessment of export potencial and identifying future development prospects in Latvia. As well as to prepare recommendations for further development of Latvian livestock sector. The Master Thesis is relevant due to the fact that beef production within Latvia has recently gained in popularity, as evidenced by the gradual increase (year by year) in the number of beef livestock produced every year, as well as the increase of export opportunities and prices. It is expected that the growth rate of the beef livestock sector will increase even more, due to the large proportion of dairy cattle farms that are suffering financial difficulties or are on the verge of bankruptcy. A potential opportunity for dairy farmers is a shift in focus towards livestock production, where demand remains relatively high. In-depth analysis of the global (worldwide) beef livestock sector is required to determine the potential of the sector in the long term. The Master’s Thesis consists of three chapters, conclusions and recommendations. In the first chapter the author analyses the origin, development and the regulatory framework of the EU common agricultural policy, assessing the benefits for Latvia of EU membership. This chapter also includes an analysis of the agricultural budget distribution in the Europian Union membership countries, as well as an evaluation of the national envelope granted to Latvia. The second chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the current situation in Latvia and EU-28, emphasizing the weaknesses and strengths of Latvian beef livestock sector. This chapter also analyses the export flows of beef and live cattle from Latvia and EU-28 to the rest of the world. In the third chapter the author has summarized (gathered) the predictions of world’s most influential organizations, as well as conducted interviews with industry experts. The chapter contains the author’s recommendations for the further development of Latvian beef livestock sector, as well as the recommendations for increasing competitiveness and productivity. The main body of the Master Thesis is laid out on 101 pages, illustrated with 2 tables and 46 figures, and has 40 appendices. The results of the Thesis can be used to determine Latvian livestock strategy.
