Viens no projektiem notiek joprojām. The present research concerns transversal skills in the English language curriculum. Curriculum is the main document that directs the process of teaching at schools. Schools, for their part, to observe the aspects prescribed in the curriculum, make use of textbooks. Thus, the textbook is the material to be scrutinized from the transversal skills perspective. At the same time, there is a Riga Secondary School that is intending to replace the current textbook Challenge for Secondary School with Solutions that is used as an extra material at the moment. Therefore, the aim of the present research is to analyse the two textbooks: Challenge for Secondary School and Solutions from the point of view of transversal skills to determine to what extent the textbooks support transversal skills and if the school wins from the textbooks substitution. The topicality of the issue lies in the fact that over the course of recent years several projects were mounted with regard to the transversal skills importance in the society. One of the projects is still in progress. The diploma paper discusses the essence of transversal skills, their necessity in our society, the possibility of transversal skills development in ELT lessons, the worthwhile contribution of textbooks in the process of the target language acquisition, the importance of the right textbook choice and the correlation of transversal skills with textbook activities that develop receptive and productive skills. The author of the research has analyzed the activities that evolve speaking and reading skills in Challenge and Solutions from the transversal skills perspective, for the overall analysis of the textbooks activities indicated that exactly these exercises prevail in the textbooks mentioned above. The analysis has been carried out by means of a taxonomy designed on the basis of transversal sub skills. Furthermore, the students’ questionnaires have been examined to learn what activities from their point of view could be of use after the graduation. Finally, by dint of the results obtained the comparative analysis of the textbooks has been carried out to determine if the school gains from the substitution of Challenge for Solutions. The study has shown that the both textbooks develop transversal skills through their activities that deal with speaking and reading skills to the extent specified by the taxonomy. The comparative analysis has indicated that the textbooks support and supplement one another.
