Background: Carotid body tumors (CBT) are rare, slow growing, highly vascular, neuroendocrine growths that originate from the paraganglionic cells of the carotid bifurcation. Objectives: The aim of this study was to review all the recent patients treated for CBT in Latvia from baseline demographics to treatment outcomes. Materials and Methods: A retrospective evaluation was obtained by reviewing the patient records from 2010-2015 at Paula Stradiņa Clinical University Hospital as it is the leading vascular center in Latvia capable of treating CBT. Patients were invited to receive a follow-up duplex ultrasound as a part of this study. Results: A total of 10 patients were treated for CBT with the standard surgical excision. Prevalence of female to male patients was 5:1 with a mean age of 56.5 years with a standard deviation of 10.26 years. The patients further were divided amongst the Shamblin classification with three patients treated for a Shamblin I tumor, four patients for a Shamblin II, and three patients for a Shamblin III. The CBT treated had an even distribution with five patients having the tumor localized on the left carotid bifurcation and the others, on the right. Half of the patients were treated with a pre-operative embolization, including one patient treated with an Onyx embolization. The mean operation time for patients who had received a pre-operative embolization was 106 minutes while those who did not undergo embolization had an average of 72 minutes. Conclusions: In Latvia, the incidence of CBT is 1:1,000,000 with the predominance for female patients. The majority of patients treated with pre-operative embolization had a carotid body tumor classified as either a Shamblin II or a Shamblin III.
