Research thesis is “Subconscious communication of the National Theatre of Latvia: a case study of productions staged by young directors in the New hall and the Actors’ hall (2014-2015)”. The fundamental question is whether the themes that the theatre critic as a spectator fixes are corresponding to the themes that the theater has intended to convey. The aim of this research is to find out the differences among three levels of communication: coding, code, and decoding. The first one is understood as theatre communication before the performance takes place for the first time, the second – the stage performance itself, the third – professional theatre critiques. An adapted theatre communication model has been made, as well as the analysis of symbolic interactionism theory and its connection to theatre semiotics. Semiotic analysis combined with content analysis has been used as research methods in the empirical part of the paper. The results show the differences between the communication that the National Theatre of Latvia had intended to convey and the communication the spectator received through a stage performance.
