Maģistra darba pētījums sastāvēja no diviem etapiem. The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to make a longitudinal research of the difference between men’s childhood experience and their involvement in infant care, also, whereas psychological state of a future father during child’s perinatal period affect their involvement in infant care. Furthermore, it was essential to understand the dynamics of men’s psychological state during perinatal period and, whether the change in psychological state act as a significant factor for a man’s involvement in his child’s care. The Master’s thesis research consists of two stages. In the first stage, 36 respondents took part – men between the ages of 23 and 39, who, at the moment of the research, for the first time had prepared themselves to become fathers and their children’s mothers were on the last trimester of pregnancy. In the second stage of the research (after childbirth) from 36 respondents, 24 young fathers gave their feedback. Within the framework of the Master’s thesis The Traumatic antecendents Questionnaire (Herman, &Van der Kolk, 1989), The Gotland Male Depression Scale (Zierau, et al., 2002), The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg & Jacobs, 1983) were used, as well as The Newborn Care Involvement Self-Assessment Inventory which was made for the research of the present Master’s thesis in order to learn the extent, to which fathers participate in daily infant care. The study revealed that father’s involvement in infant care statistically significantly is not associated with their childhood experience, as well as involvement in infant care is not statistically significantly associated neither with anxiety, nor with depression change during the perinatal period, which indicates that the changes in these parameters statistically significantly are not connected with fathers’ involvement in infant care. Statistically significant differences between prenatal and postnatal measurements exist only for the state of anxiety, moreover, during prenatal period men showed lower anxiety level than during the postnatal period. The research results have shown that the involvement in infant care predict both prenatal and postnatal depressions, generally, symptoms of depression are more apparent during the perinatal period, which involves a lesser fathers’ involvement in infant care. Moreover, the involvement in infant care is negatively predicted by the state anxiety during the prenatal period, but during the postnatal period it is positively predicted by the state anxiety and negatively – by the trait anxiety.
