One of the main objectives of economic policy in European Union is diminishing differences in the level of development among EU Member States, i.e. real convergence process to ensure harmonious economic development and balanced expansion. The aim of the master’s thesis is by assessing real convergence in European Union and the Baltic States real convergence with the average level of European Union clarify the process results, problems and make proposals to improve the situation. The results show that there is real convergence among EU Member States (2-3% per year), as well as the Baltic States converge with the average level of EU-28 (6% per year); however the process is described as very slow. The projected speed (2015.-2020.) is even slower, respectively 1-2% per year among 28 EU Member states and 4-5% per year in the Baltic States moving to the average level of EU-28.
