Pārmērīga antibakteriālu līdzekļu lietošana veicina epidēmijas mēroga bakteriālās rezistences pieaugumu attīstītajās un attīstības valstīs. Bakteriālās rezistences pieaugums atdzīvina interesi par alternatīvām antibakteriālām terapijām. Viena no tām iesaista bakteriofāgus – vīrusus, kuriem piemīt spējas inficēt un vairoties baktēriju saimniekšūnās veicinot to lizēšanu. Aptaujātie respondenti uzskata, ka bakteriofāgu terapija, iespējami, var mazināt nepamatotu plaša spektra antibiotiku, it īpaši maziem bērniem, un kopējās bakteriālās rezistences pieaugumu. Bakteriofāgu terapija ir maz pazīstama Latvijā, iespējams, tā varētu tikt akceptēta no ārstu puses pacientu ārstēšanā un ieviesta Latvijā. Excessive use of antibiotics has led to the development of a bacterial resistance in developing and developed countries on an epidemic scale. The rapid and potent growth of bacterial resistance has revived an interest in alternative antibacterial therapies. One of them is the use of bacteriophages, i.e., viruses that have the abilities to infect, self-replicate in and kill host bacteria through their lysis. The use of bacteriophage therapy in the eradication of different strains of bacteria (resistant as well) is well documented. However, the mechanism of action of phages is yet to be elucidated. That is the reason why regulative authorities obstruct the clinical practice.of bacteriophage preparations. The aim of the current work was to find out the opinion of healthcare specialists (general practitioners) on existing antibacterial therapy and to determine their awareness about bacteriophage therapy. Questionnaires were completed by healthcare professionals doctors. For the data analyses 70 surveys were used. Questionnaire results showed that 64% of the respondent healthcare specialists consider bacterial resistance a serious issue in Latvia, and 76% think that it is not actualized enough in the health care area. Of questioned, 89% agree that the search for novel antibacterial treatment. 60 % know of bacteriophage therapy and the health experts believe the use of bacteriophage therapy may be able to prevent the unjustified use of wide range antibiotics in little children and to decrease overall bacterial resistance. In conclusion, bacteriophage therapy in Latvia is moderately known by doctors but might be approved by them for use in patients. Introduction of bacteriophage therapy might be
