In this work author examines how the refugee crisis has affected the Schengen area and how EU and the Member States have reacted to prevent the effects of the crisis. Many Member States have used the rights to temporarily restre border controls which is regulated in the Schengen Border Code, while others prefer to use unusual methods like police control installation or wall construction. EU meanwhile focuses on improvment of Frontex, to ensure protection of external borders. The author concludes that the Schengen internal borders could function without the temporary restoration of border control, but to reach this level it is importent to ensure full protection of the external borders, the European Border and Coast Guard supposedly is able to provide this protection. To the border and coast guards to be able to fully carry out their work changes is necessary, that would not allow Member States to derogate from the aid and compliance with the requirements.
