In October 2016, when the changes in Latvian general education curriculum and approach started, the author of the master’s paper faced incomprehension and a lack of support towards the new competency-based approach among teachers. As the key to successful implementation of the new curriculum and approach is the wellbeing and support from the teachers, the author of the Master’s paper, English teacher, aimed to research the readiness of general education foreign language teachers to implement the competency-based approach. To reach the aim and objectives of the research, the theoretical literature on competences, competency-based approach, the role of the teacher in implementing the competency-based approach as well as the experience of Finland and Estonia was analyzed. As the method of the research, the phenomenological research was used. There were 118 teachers questionnaired, 7 foreign language teachers interviewed and there was a focus group discussion organised in Babite Secondary school. It was found that mainly foreign language teachers are psychologically ready and have the necessary knowledge and skills to implement the competency-based approach in lessons; however, the informational and encouraging support is expected from the educational policy making institutions.
