dc.description.abstract | Today, tuberculosis is one of the most common causes of death in patients around the world. Most cases of tuberculosis are caused by M.tuberculosis. The research includes an analysis of literature in order to understand the mechanisms of resistance of M.tuberculosis to anti-tuberculosis agents. In the practical part, BACTEC MGIT system was used to determine the resistance of M.tuberculosis in addition to using the results obtained at the Mycobacteriology Laboratory of the Centre of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases of Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) and summarised in the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Statistical analysis shows that the number of cases of tuberculosis in the world and in Latvia is declining and, thanks to good treatment strategies, the percentage of people cured is high compared to other European countries. The most common resistance among all resistant cases was to isoniazid and rifampicin belonging to the first-line medications, while the most common resistance of M.tuberculosis to the second-line medications was to ofloxacin. No M.tuberculosis isolate resistant to linezolid was found.
