The theme of the bachelors research is - Holistic care for the child inside the observation unit. According to the center, in 2013 in Latvia 59378 children were hospitalised. Whilst under the care of observational unit, the nurse starts the care process. Children with different illnesses are in a vulnerable position whilst at the observational unit. Their state depends on the care provided by the nurse who is aware of the specific needs of that child. This research has aimed to explore the principles of holistic care of the nurse within the observational unit. Tasks of the research are: 1. Analyse scientific literature and research regarding holistic care; 2. Create an instrument for the investigation which is an interview; 3. Carry out the investigation; 4. Summarise and analyse results of the investigation; 5. Reach a conclusion. The question of the research is: How does a nurse provide holistic care for the child within observation unit? The chosen instrument for this investigation is an interview. The method used for this research is the qualitative method. In conclusion, from gathered and analysed results it can be found that principles of holistic care within the observation unit is individual care. The most important aspect for the nurse providing holistic care - is process of care depending on individual needs. The nurse is not only carrying out the tasks technically correct, but also with professional approach. Providing holistic care, the nurse judges and understands the unsatisfied needs of the patient and the consequences that may follow. Each persons wellbeing is made up of an inseparable system, which consists of physical, psychological, social, intellectual, spiritual and emotional dimensions. Solving problems and satisfying the needs of the child, the nurse will follow designed standards and rules, but will adapt this in order to adapt the care to meet the needs of each individual child. Holistic care has a positive influence on the health of the patient within the observational unit. Holistic approach helps nurses to care for the patients with higher quality and have more diverse approach in problem solving. All the factors are included that may have an effect on the individual. Patient is observed meeting all the aspects, resulting in a more effective way of care because all possible arising issues are considered.
