Property is an essential concept that designates living space, possessions and legal obligations and liabilities of the involved parties. The increasing importance of globalisation demands for terminological equivalents that would ensure the same impact and legal consequences in both source and target languages. The present research aims at examining if the principle of legal equivalence is followed in the transfer of property-related terminology from English into Latvian. The analysis employs the qualitative research method, assessing the meaning, function and use of English and Latvian terms on property issues. The results demonstrate that the chosen corpus does follow the principle of legal equivalence, emphasising the importance of culture and historical development, especially for terms in different systems of law.
