A test is an important tool for assessing educational results which needs to comply with societal needs and students’ characteristics. The accessibility and fast evolution of the information compel the creators of the tests to introduce new requirements, so that the tests’ results reflect the evaluation of student’s knowledge. Nowadays it is crucial to evaluate the students’ competence in highest level of thinking: their ability to work with information, their analytical, critical and creative thinking as well as the ability to resolve problematic situations. The result of the present study shows that the 7th grade tests in geography are not fit to evaluate the highest level of thinking of the students and that the students experience difficulties when facing tasks designed to test these skills. Nevertheless, the results of the tasks aimed at evaluating the highest level of thinking of the students prove that these tasks are more adequate for testing the knowledge and the skills of the students, because they evaluate the ability of critical thinking, rather than the knowledge of fact, hence allowing the students to demonstrate a larger scope of skills in different fields. The conclusion of the present study is thus the necessity of focusing the preparation of the students more on tasks aimed at the evaluation of the highest level of thinking.
